Confidence, The Antidote To Fear & Performance Issues

Confidence is an important internal resource. Without confidence we take fewer risks in life, without confidence we attempt less and our life shrinks. Confidence is the antidote to many fears and performance issues.

So if it’s so important how can we develop more of it? We have all felt confidence at some time in our lives although some of us may need to search our memory banks more than others to access one of those memories. Children are confident at birth. We are born with only two fears, loud noises and falling. All other confidence robbing fears and experiences are learned.

A great way to feel more confident is to remember and re experience old feelings of confidence so that you remember what it was like. By keeping an especially good experience from your past accessible you give yourself the capability to feel confident at anytime.

Some other ways to develop more confidence are:

  1. Taking action and accomplishing a task. By accomplishing a goal we demonstrate to ourselves that we have what it takes to succeed.
  2. Become less self conscious. Have you ever noticed how when you are focused on someone or something else we feel better about ourselves?
  3. Don’t hang out with confidence destroyers. You know the people who suck out your positive feelings about yourself… Watch out for self–criticism as well.
